Disgraced Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Peter Beggs' employment has not yet been terminated.

In August it was reported Mr Beggs had been fired following an investigation into his conduct as chief executive.

His departure came soon after another board member Sharon Hunter resigned unexpectedly.

Documents released to Newshub under the Official Information Act reveal Mr Beggs' "employment has not yet terminated".

"Peter Beggs is helping Antarctica New Zealand's Board to ensure a smooth transition. He will finish at the end of September," Antarctica New Zealand GM Communications Megan Martin confirmed to Newshub.

The government agency forked out $35,695 for PricewaterhouseCoopers to investigate his alleged misconduct.

A further $4750 was spent on about seven hours of legal advice by Dundas St Employment Lawyers.

Mr Beggs' remuneration is between $330,000 to $339,999.

"No payment has been made or calculated in respect of Mr Beggs as his employment has not yet terminated. However, as stated publicly, Mr Beggs will be paid his contractual entitlements only," Ms Martin said in response to the OIA request.

Mr Beggs took up the Chief Executive post in 2014, and had previously served on several international bodies.

The government agency is charged with carrying out New Zealand's activities in Antarctica - overseeing the running of Scott Base and scientific research programmes.
