NZ weather: Brace yourselves for icy, windy start to spring, warns MetService

  • 02/09/2018

Winter might be officially over, but icy cold winds and snow are expected to batter Aotearoa next week.

MetService are forecasting a tumultuous transition into spring, with several frosty outbreaks expected to chill the country.

Central New Zealand will likely be cooled by a trough on Monday, before it moves up towards the upper North Island followed by some strong winds.

Cold blasts will also whisk through the South Island, which with moist air will likely bring snow to Southland - as well as parts of Fiordland, Otago, Canterbury and Marlborough, said MetService meteorologist Andy Best.

There are currently severe weather watches in force for heavy rain, strong winds and heavy snow in the areas, with some potentially reaching warning levels soon.

People may also want to layer up as temperatures will struggle to reach the low teens, with 10 the maximum forecasted for Wellington mid-week.

Alexandra can expect 0degC mornings on Wednesday and Thursday, and below -2degC on Friday.
