Two-hundred fixed-gear bikes will be spinning into Wellington on Saturday for a new cycle-sharing scheme.

Onzo bikes can be used and dropped anywhere accessible to the public.

Auckland residents will be familiar with the scheme, which has been running in the city since October 2017.

Chief operating officer Harry Yang says he's confident Wellingtonians will get on board.

"We're just pumped to launch this and see how it goes. We hope everyone gets into cycling a lot more," he said.

Mr Yang said the scheme is about convenience and short trips.

"Bus routes and train routes don't take you to exactly your final destination, and that's where our bikes come in - just pop on a bike after your last bus ride, and take the rest of your journey," he said.

The bikes cost $1 an hour, and people can start hire them by downloading the Onzo app.

Mr Yang says Onzo's point of difference to other bike-sharing schemes is they are dockless.

"You can leave your bike anywhere that's publicly accessible," he said.

"We trust our users to leave it somewhere sensible - so it's not in the middle of a driveway or somewhere that would obstruct the public."
