A Trade Me ad seeking flatmates at an Invercargill home received 35 complaints before it was removed from online.

The listing, posted on August 1, asked for flatmates to join an Otatara resident at a four-bedroom property.

As well as asking for candidates to be "young professional, tidy, easy-going" and of a "similar age" to the 23-year-old occupant, it also requested "no students or Indians" apply.

Trade Me spokesperson Millie Silvester told NZME the post received 35 complaints before it was taken down on October 1.

Ms Silvester told Newshub the website didn't want members "to be dicks" when writing their ads, though it was difficult to govern flatmate advertisements.

"Flatmates-wanted ads are tricky as you are allowed to be very specific about who you want to live with," she said.

"For instance, a young female member can say she wants a 25- to 30-year-old female flatmate.

"It is important that when a member lists a room in their house they're honest so everyone is on the same page and the member doesn't waste anyone's time."
