Body found in search for missing pregnant woman

Police have found a body in relation to the search for Sonam Shelar, the pregnant woman who was reported missing on Saturday.

The body was found at a beach on the Wairarapa on Wednesday.

While formal identification is yet to take place, police say they believe it's that of Mrs Shelar. Her next of kin has been notified and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

The 26-year-old went missing two days after an ultrasound result came back inconclusive. She was five months pregnant.

Her husband told NZME she was upset after the results came back.

"She had always dreamed for a baby boy but... after the ultrasound they were not sure if it was a girl or a boy," Sagar Shelar said.

"As soon as we got in the car she was crying and so upset because she wanted a boy".

The investigation into Mrs Shelar's disappearance is still ongoing and Police are working closely with her family.

Mr Shelar told Stuff that officers searched their Khandallah home after his wife went missing.

"I know that I'm their first suspect, but I know that I haven't done anything wrong."

Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen Mrs Shelar on Friday 16 November or Saturday 17 November 2018.

She was last seen wearing a brown jacket with fur on the hood, as well as white, black and orange trainers.

People with CCTV cameras showing the road or street in the areas of Cashmere Avenue, Onslow Road, Box Hill, Burma Road, Agra Crescent are also urged to contact Police on 04 381 2000 or via email to opzeplin@police.govt.nz.
