Meet Te Hare Robertson, the man behind the infamous Auckland Queen St McDonald's twerk video

Meet Te Hare Robertson, the man who inspired the infamous Queen Street McDonald's twerk video.

The footage, which went viral, showed a man with a large speaker playing songs while a scantily clad woman danced for the crowd, who showed their appreciation by "making it rain with chips".

After the video was called "100 percent pure NZ" and a fantastic advertisement for our tourism industry, Newshub decided to track down the man behind the music to see what inspires him.

Our journey led us back to the Auckland Britomart McDonald's, where, on Friday and Saturday nights, Mr Robertson comes out to "keep the positive vibe".

"Usually out here there's always fights. The clubgoers - usually when they have their feeds here, they get bored, they don't know what to do with themselves so they just end up taking it out," he told Newshub.

He's become a well-known character in the central city, and Mr Robertson is happy to play whatever people want - even a bit of ABBA.

"Usually I ask them, aye, what song they want me to play, and I'll play it for them," he says.

"Usually I just stand up, see people coming past, if they dance I join them, or if they're too shy to dance I'll hype them up and go 'wooooooh yeah!'"

His most famous moment came as a result of the twerk video, in which a man squatted down and scattered McDonald's fries in the woman's direction, leaving the ground covered in fries. His sudden success came as a shock to a humble Mr Robertson.

"I actually did not know of that video until I saw it on Newshub and I was like 'aye, I recognize that place'," he told Newshub.

"I was actually surprised because I wasn't expecting it to go that viral."

But his good deeds didn't stop there. After a long night spent playing music and entertaining people to stop any fighting, Mr Robertson cleaned the mess up afterwards.

"I'm just doing my part. Keep people happy to make people dance. Not fight," he says.
