Gale-force winds and heavy rain is expected this Guy Fawkes weekend in western areas of the South Island.

Emergency services are warning people to be careful with fireworks in the wind.

Pete Gallagher from Fire Risk Management says it doesn't hurt to wait until the wind settles on Sunday.

"They're designed to go straight up in the air. If the wind is too strong and they're not going straight up in the air, that's a time to stop, put them away and wait until weather conditions are a little bit better."

Mr Gallagher says when you've got high winds, the flight of fireworks can be unpredictable.

"Particularly in urban places where we have a build-up of houses - the wind currents around houses can change dramatically."

Mr Gallagher says have a hose or bucket or water handy, and call 111 if someone gets burnt.
