Dashcam captures driver's narrow escape from Otago crash

A truck driver's dashcam has captured the intense moment a car tried to overtake a truck on a yellow line, south of Moeraki in Otago.

Richard Pollard saw two cars driving on the wrong side of the road earlier in March. Footage shows the one at the front dropped back just in time to avoid a head-on collision with oncoming traffic.

"I thought there was going to be a crash," he told Newshub.

Pollard, who regularly drives the road between Dunedin and Timaru, says he frequently sees vehicles driving dangerously.

"I see people cutting and overtaking on yellow lines pretty much on a daily basis."

The video shows cars move past Pollard's truck on the wrong side of the road.

"[One of them] just stayed on the road attempting to get past the truck in front of me."

From where Pollard was sitting in his truck, he could tell the car did not know what was coming up ahead.

"I thought there's no way he can see over that hill. If there's something coming, it's not going to end well."

Pollard says both cars were fortunate there was enough room to pull behind the truck.

"The truck coming the other way did move off the centre line... they could see what was about to happen, or what could have happened."

Pollard has handed the footage over to police, and encourages anyone who sees any acts of dangerous driving to report it to *555.

Police say they have talked to a driver and an infringement notice has been issued.
