Footage has emerged of what is believed to be a suspect being arrested by police.
A video, shot on a cellphone on Brougham Street, shows police vehicles either side of a car - believed to be a Subaru Forrester - pulled over on the side of the road.
A number of armed police are seen on the footpath around a man dressed in black clothing who is on the ground.
The video shows the Forrester's front right wheel spinning.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed a suspect had been taken into custody, however she was unable to give any further information.
Police say they could be dealing with other offenders.
