The man arrested over the Christchurch shooting was charged with the murder of a woman who's still alive.

A police spokesperson said in a statement that an "error was made in the charging document prepared for the first court appearance of the man charged with murder in relation to the Christchurch terror attacks."

The woman's name was supressed when the accused appeared in court for the first time last week.

"The error saw an incorrect victim name included in the charging document."

Police confirmed she was connected to the shooting, but not killed.

They said they have apologised to the woman, admitting they had made a mistake.

Officials have spoken with the person incorrectly named on the charging document and apologised.

"New Zealand Police regret this error and apologies for any harm caused by the mistake."

They said further charges are expected to be laid against the accused, and the living woman's name will be taken off the charge sheet.
