Aucklanders use more water after advised to conserve

Aucklanders are yet to take action on water conservation, despite being warned that their water supply is running low.

After being advised to take shorter showers and check for leaks earlier this week, Watercare says Aucklanders' water usage has, in fact, risen.

An unusually dry first half of the year has depleted the city's total water storage by 25 percent. The Waitakere Ranges dams have received 44 percent less rainfall and the Hunua dams are down 34 percent.

Watercare's Roseline Klein told Newshub that Aucklanders need to get smart when it comes to water.

"We're not disappointed in Aucklanders, but we would really like them to start implementing as much water efficiency as they can over the next weeks and month.

"If they start to be a bit more water-wise now, it could help for the rest of the year. We expect a dry end to 2019."

Despite Auckland experiencing a dose of heavy rain today, Klein says it won't fix the deficit from the past six months.

"To give you an idea of how big that rain deficit is - we would need at least another eight days of downpours this month just to bring levels close to what they usually are for this time of year."

Advice from Watercare:

  • Find and fix leaks
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
  • Limit showers to under four minutes
  • Only do full loads of washing
  • A message we'll have to get used to as climate change starts to affect our everyday life.
