A car went through a fence and into a swimming pool in Counties Manukau before an attempt by two culprits to flee police went horribly wrong.

A police statement said, in what was an "unbeliever-pool" incident, after fully submerging the car in Pukekohe on Sunday night, the car's occupants fled on foot before being tracked by a police dog.

"Obviously the occupants of the house heard the noise and saw the car and called us," Inspector Tony Wakelin told Stuff.

One of the car's occupants had a warrant to arrest, and both had numerous warrants to interview, police said on Facebook, before users bombarded it with puns.

"Not the most optimal kind of car-pool," one said.

"I guess it's one way to dip your lights," another wrote.

Insp Wakelin told Stuff the pair appeared in court on Monday.
