Flights delayed due to heavy fog in Wellington

Heavy fog has crippled the capital's airport, cancelling and delaying flights.

Three flights into Wellington from Auckland were forced to turn back due to low cloud blanketing the city.

The Wellington Airport website shows four departing flights have been cancelled and nine more delayed.

MetService meteorologist Claire Nickson says the fog drifted over from the Hutt on Sunday night and blanketed the city early on Monday morning.

"What happened is that fog formed in the Hutt Valley late last night and a breeze pushed it over the harbour and across the airport," Nickson told Newshub.

New Zealand Transport Agency warned motorists to take extra care as heavy fog covered the Urban Motorway into Ngauranga Gorge.

The organisation warned motorists to increase following distances and keep their eyes on the road.

Luckily for commuters, the fog is beginning to lift.

"At this stage, it looks like it's clearing up," said Nickson.

The fog is expected to lift throughout the afternoon.
