Man charged with baby's death sobbed during court appearance

A 30-year-old man sobbed in court on Wednesday after being charged with the murder of a baby.

The 10-month-old infant was airlifted from Hokitika to Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday in a critical condition. However, he has since died from his injuries.

The accused man was originally charged with one count of wounding with intent, but after the baby's death, he was charged with murder.

He sobbed and looked distressed during an appearance in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday. He had close family members supporting him in the court.

Details around the incident are suppressed by the judge, as well as the man's name and his relationship to the baby.

He will reappear in court on July 30.
