Severe weather warning for South Island

The South Island will be battered by heavy rain over the next two days.

A front will move north across the South Island throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing torrential rain with it.

From Westland to Otira, Metservice has issued a severe weather warning. Fiordland has a severe weather watch.

"It's pretty much rain for the whole of the West Coast of the South Island," Metservice meteorologist Sarah Haddon told Newshub on Monday.

Haddon says the weather will start to hit on Tuesday night and last through until Wednesday.

Metservice has two classes of weather warnings in place.

"Orange is when it will hit the criteria of serious weather," Haddon told Newshub.

"And red is for when we think there are going to be serious dangers."

Tuesday's weather warning is still orange said Haddon.

"I would say the majority of our warnings will be orange - red is for when it's really dangerous."

Earlier in the year the West Coast was slammed by heavy rain which caused slips, washouts and flooding throughout the region.
