Weather: Which areas could be hit by rain, gales, snow this week

Rain, snow and gales are on their way after a week of nice weather - but there's uncertainty over where and when in New Zealand they could hit.

As the "exceptionally strong" high currently affecting us starts to more away, sub-tropical rain will be pulled in across parts of the country.

But MetService says there's a "big question mark" over how long the rainy, windy weather sticks around. One model shows the rain easing by Friday - however the other shows rain and gales sticking around into Saturday.

"There is some weather-model uncertainty at the end of this week," it says on Facebook.

"A disagreement in the upper-atmosphere dynamics means some models then create a deep low pressure east of New Zealand.

"This would lead to strong southerlies and rain persisting into Saturday for eastern North Island, but also a good dump of snow for Mount Ruapehu in time for the school holidays."

A MetService prediction map shows the chances each region will be hit by rain. The heaviest rain is expected in Westland and the very north of New Zealand.

Another image shows the probability of more than 5cm of snow in 24 hours over the next six days.

MetService expects its model differences to be resolved in the next day or two.
