A Christchurch businessman jailed for sharing the mosque attack livestream has had his appeal dismissed.

Philip Neville Arps, 44, was appealing his 21-month prison sentence for distributing the video, which was deemed objectionable by the Chief Censor.

Fifty-one people lost their lives in the attack on two mosques, which was livestreamed on Facebook.

The High Court announced on Tuesday Arps' appeal would be dismissed, saying the sentence he was handed was correct.

Arps argued the punishment was excessive and he should have received home detention.

But the High Court disagreed, saying home detention would have been inappropriate.

Arps sent the video to a friend asking for a 'kill count' to be added for humorous purposes. He also distributed the raw video to 30 others.
