The Kiwi artist who captured New Zealand in mourning

You may not know her face, but her art has circulated the globe.

The March 15 attacks sent shock waves through New Zealand and left many of us feeling helpless.

One Kiwi illustrator captured Aotearoa in mourning.  Wellington-based Ruby Jones's illustration shows two women embracing. One wears a hijab.

The words she wrote underneath conveyed the grief, so many Kiwis felt.

"This is your home and you should have been safe here."

Her image went viral, and she was asked to design a cover for Time Magazine, honouring the 51 people who were killed.

Jones told The Project her original illustration was a natural reaction to the horrendous attack.

"I was listening to the news unfold like everyone else and I was trying to comprehend it," she said on Monday.

"The image came from me wanting to reach out and hug anyone who was affected."

"The words came shortly after when I realised a lot of the people affected were refugees who had come to New Zealand looking for a safe place."

Two days after the attack, Jones received the email from Time Magazine, asking her to design its cover.

"It said, 'Hello from Time' - I just thought they were saying 'we like your picture' and it said 'we would love a cover'."

"Because it was so unbelievable I just thought, I can't overthink this, so I just did what came naturally."

Nine months later, she's published a book of illustrations and messages of hope called All Of This Is For You.

"I just want it to be a book of reminders of things that people already know and maybe they've forgotten along the way," she said.
