Four homes are being evacuated as a precaution as a large scrub fire burns in the Far North.

Fire and Emergency were called to Ramp Rd in Lake Ohia at 5:30pm on Thursday after a vehicle hit power lines, sparking the fire.

Police have asked residents to leave, with the fire currently 60 hectares in size. Twelve fire trucks and three helicopters were on site to fight the blaze.

Power was knocked out to about 1000 homes, RNZ reported. Lines company Top Energy's site on Friday morning said the estimated restoration time is about 11am.
