Police say a large fire that broke out in central Hamilton over the weekend "appears to have been deliberately lit" and have released an image of a suspect.

The blaze burnt through a building on Hamilton's Victoria St at about 2:45pm on Sunday, spreading onto the roof and sending large plumes of dark smoke into the sky.

At one stage, there were six fire appliances battling the inferno, with an aerial appliance and Hazmat unit also on the scene.

Late on Monday night, police released a statement appealing for information about the "suspicious fire".

"The fire, that appears to have been deliberately lit, spread to the second floor and the roof of the building, gutting the upper floor and causing part of the roof to collapse," the statement said.

"There were no reports of any injuries."

Police have now released an image of a man who is believed to be involved. He is wearing a grey hoodie in the image with a backpack on.

"Police would like to speak to anyone who may recognise this man or the clothing he is wearing.

"Police would also like to speak to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the fire, or who has information which can assist.

"They can contact Hamilton Police on 105 quoting file number 191215/7359 or report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
