Emergency services rushed to a multi-storey building in Lower Hutt where a lift plummeted from at least the fourth floor.

Fire and Emergency were called to High Street shortly before 10am on Wednesday.

Police were also called to the incident but are no longer at the scene. A spokesperson told Newshub it "appeared the lift had fallen".

The building houses Te Awakairangi Health Network. The organisation's chief executive officer one of its staff members was trapped in the lift.

"There were three people in the lift - one was a staff member and two were clients," Bridget Allan told Newshub.

"It was some kind of lift malfunction - I understand the people who do maintenance on the lift will be checking today."

Wellington Free Ambulance treated three people for minor injuries.

Allan says all three people escaped relatively unharmed, if a little shaken.

"They are being supported today just because of the shock."

Two fire crews worked to release the three people trapped.
