A man has been arrested in Dargaville after a number of vehicles were stolen from two hospital carparks in Auckland.

A police spokesperson confirmed on Sunday morning that a 45-year-old man has been arrested following an investigation into the thefts at Middlemore Hospital in Otahuhu and Auckland City Hospital in Grafton.

He has been charged with theft-ex-car and fraudulent use of a document. The spokesperson said further charges are likely and enquiries are ongoing.

The man was arrested on Thursday and has since appeared in court. He was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in the Auckland District Court in May.

On Saturday afternoon, police said a 23-year-old man had been charged with two counts of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, burglary and the theft of a motor vehicle after a Defence Force (NZDF) vehicle was stolen in Manawatu overnight.

The vehicle was located down a bank near Levin, police confirmed on Saturday morning, after the white Toyota Hi-Ace van was reported as stolen.

"He is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court on Monday," the statement said, adding the theft was believed to be "opportunistic" rather than a deliberate act against the NZDF.
