The woman found dead at a Te Anau motel last week has been named as Shirley Alaina Reedy, 52.

A 52-year-old man appeared in Invercargill District Court on Saturday, charged with her murder. He has been remanded in custody without plea until June 9.

The investigation team is not seeking anyone else in relation to Shirley's death.

Police found Reedy, who is from Balclutha, deceased at a property on Cleddau St on Friday, May 15 after being called to the scene about 6:35pm.

Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy says the pair, who were visiting Te Anau when Reedy died, were known to one another.

"We appreciate this incident has been unsettling for some local Te Anau residents," Det Sgt McCloy said. "As a consequence, we want to acknowledge both the Te Anau and wider communities."

Det Snr Sgt Stu Harvey said on Friday that there was no further risk to the community.

An examination of the scene has now been carried out.

Southland District councillor Ebel Kremer, who lives in Te Anau, told Stuff that it was "the first incident like this" he could remember.

"It's a very unusual situation for us," he said. "It's just been one horrific thing after another for us this year, first the floods, then COVID-19, and now this."
