A man who died after being shot by police near Brixton on Tuesday afternoon has been named as Allan Neville Rowe.

The incident unfolded after police received a call about a distressed man who had left a house in Brixton. His car was later found off State Highway 3 on Mamaku Rd.

Police said the 54-year-old was shot after he pointed a firearm at officers as they approached his vehicle. 

A police statement said Rowe's body was removed from the scene on Wednesday and blessed by local kaumatua.

"Police will continue to provide support to his family at this difficult time."

A scene examination will continue on Thursday, the statement said.

"The road remains closed to through traffic."
