New Zealand's 1487 coronavirus cases: Locations, transmissions, recoveries, ages

New Zealand has entered its 15th day in a row where the daily recorded COVID-19 cases are in the single-digits.

There are 1487 recorded cases throughout Aotearoa and a majority of these have recovered. Of these, 1136 are confirmed cases and 351 are classed as probable. Probable cases are where a test has returned negative for the virus, but doctors believe, due to a patient's exposure history and symptoms, they do have the illness.

A total of 1266 people have recovered. Although this is higher than the number of confirmed cases, this number also takes into account recovered probable cases. A patient is classed as recovered once it's been 10 days since the onset of symptoms and they haven't shown symptoms for 48 hours.

There are 201 active cases, which is 13.5 percent of all recorded cases.

Twenty people have died from the virus. Eight people are currently in hospital, with none in intensive care.

Locations of cases

As of Sunday, the Waitematā District Health Board (DHB) continues to have the most reported cases, and it now has the highest number of active cases. Tairāwhiti on the North Island's east coast has the least number of total cases, and it is among several regions that have no active cases.

Four people in hospital are in Waitematā, two are in Auckland, and there is one each in Counties Manukau and South Canterbury.

Transmission

The Ministry of Health has recently changed how it publicly reports transmission data. There were previously four main sets of data: contact with a known case, recent overseas travel, community transmission and source under investigation.

Now there are five types of transmission:

  • Imported cases: Cases with a reported history of international travel within 14 days of onset (38 percent)
  • Imported related cases: Cases that have a reported link - close contact or epidemiological link - to an imported or overseas acquired case (32 percent)
  • Locally acquired cases, epidemiologically linked: Cases that have a reported link - close contact or other epidemiological link - to a locally acquired case with an unknown source (24 percent)
  • Locally acquired cases, unknown source: Cases that have no reported history of international travel within 14 days of onset and no recorded epidemiological link to a source case (4 percent)
  • Source of infection remains under investigation (1 percent)

Clusters

Many of New Zealand's cases are linked to clusters. These are groups of ten or more cases connected through transmission and who aren't all part of the same household. Clusters include both confirmed and probable cases.

There have been 16 significant clusters, three of which are considered closed.

A cluster is closed once 28 consecutive days have passed - or two incubation periods for the virus - since the most recent report date for a reported case in or associated with the group.

Many of New Zealand's clusters have unknown origins.

  • Bluff wedding: 98 cases, linked to overseas exposure
  • Marist College, Auckland: 94 cases, unknown origin
  • Matamata bar: 76 cases, linked to overseas exposure
  • Rosewood Rest Home, Christchurch: 55 cases, unknown origin
