A hit-and-run which left a man in critical condition has police appealing to the public for leads.

Just before 2am on Friday, emergency services rushed to High Street in Carterton where a man had been found lying unconscious in the road.

He was airlifted to hospital, where he remains critically ill. CCTV footage of the area shows him walking along the west edge of the highway before the incident wearing dark clothing and a pair of white striped slides.

Det Snr Sgt Barry Bysouth is asking anyone who travelled through the area between 1am and 1:45am to contact police.

"We are hopeful the driver in this incident will do the right thing and come forward," he said on Saturday.

"But we are also working hard to build a picture of what happened."
