4.1-magnitude earthquake rattles Napier

More than 1000 people have been rattled by a shallow magnitude-4.1 earthquake near Napier.

The moderate earthquake struck just before 10:40am on Monday morning, GeoNet reports.

The tremors were at a depth of 15km, with the epicentre about 15km north-east of Napier.

More than 1500 people have reported feeling the quake on GeoNet, the vast majority of which reported feeling light or weak shaking.

"Shaky start for those of you in Hawkes Bay," wrote GeoNet on Twitter. "M4.1 earthquake at 10:39 at 15km depth... Remember to drop, cover, hold during an earthquake."

The Napier quake comes off the back of a series of tremors last week.

On Saturday, more than 3000 people were shaken by a short, sharp 3.3-magnitude earthquake near Christchurch. While it wasn't that powerful, it struck at a depth of just 5km.

A day prior, more than 9000 people reported felt a 7.4- magnitude quake early Friday, which struck 700km northeast of Gisborne, while last Tuesday, a 5.1-magnitude quake hit just offshore in the eastern Bay of Plenty.
