Christchurch terror attack: Victim Support reveals additional money for victims

Victim Support says it will distribute additional lump-sum payments to next-of-kin of victims of the Christchurch terror attack.

Announcing its plans to hand out additional funds, chief executive Kevin Tso said on Tuesday it was committed to giving 100 percent of that money to victims.

Payment amounts will include $5406 to next-of-kin of those killed, more than $3000 to those injured by a gunshot, over $2000 to other physically injured victims, and $1022 to others present during the attacks, Victim Support said in a statement.

"The distribution reflects the priorities expressed to us by victims at that time," Tso said.

In the wake of the attack last year, Victim Support faced criticism from traumatised victims who said they had been left struggling. Initially, there were reports of victims missing out on payments.

Tso said all people on the police victim list will receive payment from the latest donation.

The latest payment will total $655,890, which is in addition to several payments made last year.

"While I'm very pleased we’re able to distribute more money to victims, it is only a very small part of what we do," Tso said.
