KFC drops plans for second outlet in south Auckland suburb

A widely criticised proposal for a new KFC in south Auckland will not go ahead.

An online petition to stop the proposed store in the Otara community gained more than 3000 signatures.

In a statement, the fast-food giant says it has decided not to proceed further with the plan.

KFC says the decision came after reviewing the "commercial viability" of the new site.

It came after Otara residents took a stand against yet another fast food outlet opening in their suburb. Councillor Efeso Collins told Newshub on Thursday he was concerned.

"We've got Middlemore [Hospital] just down the road from where this KFC is going," Collins said.

"It is probably the busiest hospitals in the southern hemisphere with issues of gout, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes."

One in three adult New Zealanders is considered obese - with rates even higher in lower socioeconomic areas such as south Auckland.
