A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after running into the path of a police car in Taranaki.

Just after midnight on Friday, police say the man ran in front of the vehicle on Glover Rd in Hawera.

Acting District Commander Insp Ross McKay says the patrol car was responding to a nearby callout but was not undertaking urgent duty driving.

The two officers in the car immediately gave the man first aid before he was flown first to Hawera Hospital, then on to Wellington Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified and the two officers who were in the car are being given support.
