Waikato Police have praised two students who found a "large sum of money" in an envelope and handed it in.

In a Facebook post police said "Great work and a massive thank you to two international students studying in the Tron."

"The honesty and integrity of these two students needs to be valued & recognised, Thank you very much," the post read.

Stuff reported the two students, Sohajveer Kaur Sohi, and Rajveer Kaur, both aged 24, found the money outside The Warehouse in Hamilton on July 28.

Unsure of what to do they asked their tutor before handing it in.

"My friend (Rajveer) and I were coming back from college when we noticed an envelope near the Warehouse store," Sohi told Stuff.

"At first we thought it was just some documents, we didn't know what to do with it.

“So we went back to college and gave it to our tutor, and later we all went to the police station and handed the money in," Sohi told Stuff.

Police said they found the owner of the money and returned it to him. He gave the two students $100 each Stuff reported.
