Police are urging Hawke's Bay locals to get in contact if they see missing prisoner Sam Sulusi, who was allowed out on bail last week to spend time with his dying father.

Sulusi was granted release from prison last Monday to see his dad before he died.

However the 27-year-old failed to hand himself back into custody on Friday afternoon, in breach of his bail conditions.

Hawke's Bay Police say they have a warrant for Sulusi's arrest, and are making enquiries in an effort to locate him.

They warn any member of the public who spots him not to approach him, and instead get in touch with them directly.

"Anyone who has any information about his whereabouts or possible sightings is asked to contact Hastings Police on 111," a spokesperson said. "Information can also be passed on anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Sulusi is very recognisable thanks to a series of distinctive tattoos across his face and neck, one of which is his surname. Another large tattoo over his mouth and cheeks reads 'NPR803'.

Sulusi's father, Laki, had himself been given compassionate leave from his 4.5-year prison sentence earlier this month so he could spend the rest of his life at home, Stuff reports.

He passed away on Tuesday, after putting a stop to his dialysis.
