Police are looking into a variety of issues at a Dunedin bar including patrons vomiting from the balcony and breaching COVID-19 restrictions.

Officers were called to Dive Bar (formerly the Captain Cook Tavern) at 11:30pm on Friday after reports people were smoking cannabis and flicking cigarette butts into a cardboard rubbish bin.

Acting Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said on arrival no cannabis was found but they were advised people had been vomiting over the balcony.

They also found a raft of other issues.

The bar was breaching the Government's COVID-19 restrictions under alert level 2 as all 90 people present were not seated and there was no table service.

Bond said the bar staff said they didn't have to follow the requirements due to it being a private function.

There was also confusion around who the manager was. The person whose name was on the duty manager board said the person behind the bar was actually in charge.

The security guard also presented an expired licence.

"This will be followed-up by the alcohol harm team," Snr Sgt Bond said.

Dive Bar has been contacted for comment.
