A police hunt is underway after a 5-year-old boy was allegedly punched in the face by a stranger while walking in a Sydney suburb on Tuesday.

The incident happened while he was walking with his grandmother and older brother in the suburb of Glebe after 4pm.

New South Wales Police said the man, who wasn't known to the family, punched the boy as he walked past them.

"The boy fell to the ground and the man continued walking in an easterly direction," police said in a statement. "The grandmother assisted the children home and contacted police to report the incident."

Police said the boy wasn't injured other than receiving bruising on his chin and local officers have commenced an investigation.
