A child has died after a serious crash south of Whangarei.
Police were called to the two-car collision just after 7:30pm on Friday, on State Highway 1 at Mata.
The child died at the scene, despite attempts to revive them.
Police said diversions had been put in place, with the road closed "for some time".
There have been 262 fatalities on the road this year to date, behind 2017, 2018 and 2019, but ahead of 2016.
