A 45-year-old man will face the court after a slew of early morning assaults in Christchurch, which left five women traumatised.

The man has been charged with three charges of assault with intent to commit rape on a female over 16, five charges of burglary and one of strangulation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie said the five victims have shown "extreme courage".

"Despite these traumatic events, thanks to the actions of these women, we were able to mobilise our staff to the area quickly and locate the suspect," Baillie said on Thursday.

The man is alleged to have broken into the homes of the women between 6am and 7am on Thursday.

Police are continuing scene examinations at a number of Upper Riccarton properties, and ask anyone with information to contact them on 105 and mention Operation Linen.
