Oranga Tamariki has stopped home visits in Napier after two gang shootings in Maraenui and Tamatea this week.

On Friday afternoon, Oranga Tamariki said it postponed staff from visiting homes due to "safety reasons" after discussions with police.

On Tuesday night a man was rushed to hospital after a drive-by shooting in Tamatea.

That was followed by a man being shot on Lister Cres in Maraenui on Wednesday night, suffering non-life-threatening wounds.

Oranga Tamariki East Coast regional manager Julie Tangaere says whānau have been asked to temporarily visit the agency's office for meetings.

"If urgent visits are required to ensure children are safe, Oranga Tamariki will work with police to make sure appropriate support is in place.

"Keeping children safe is at the heart of everything our social workers do, and we are working hard to make sure both social workers and children are kept safe."
