Wellington rocked by 'short, sharp' earthquake

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake has struck near Wellington, with more than 800 people reporting they felt the shaking on the GeoNet website.

The quake hit at a depth of 36km, shortly after 1pm on Monday. Striking 45km south-east of Seddon, the shaking was felt as far as Martinborough - more than 200 kilometres from the epicentre. 

Geonet reports more than 1200 people felt the tremors with most people describing it as "weak". However, 22 people said they felt the quake was moderate and two reported it as being "strong".
