A 6-year-old boy has been named by police as the victim of a crash near Whangarei on New Year's Day.
Myka Tuala, of Wellington, died in the two-car collision on State Highway 1 at Hikurangi on Friday.
A police statement said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."
Nine people have been killed on New Zealand roads during the 2020/21 holiday period - more than double last year.
