A man with a gunshot wound has been taken to Auckland Hospital.

Police were alerted just after 4pm on Monday after he initially visited a Mount Wellington medical centre with his injury.

He was later transferred to hospital in a moderate condition.

A police spokesperson says the firearm was found at the man's address and an investigation is now underway to find out what occurred.

It follows a separate firearms incident in the Auckland suburb of Ōtara earlier in the day where a man had a gun near the mall area at about 2:30pm.

The man left in a car which was soon found by police in nearby Fisher Crescent.

Five people were taken into custody and an air rifle was seized by police.
