Homicide investigation launched after body discovered in Christchurch home

A man has been charged with murder after a body was discovered in Christchurch.

The 38-year-old appeared in Christchurch District Court on Monday morning.

Police rushed to reports of a serious assault at an Armagh Street property on Sunday evening, and discovered the body on arrival.

Witnesses report seeing a man "covered" in blood carrying a weapon running through the streets.

A witness staying at a backpackers on Barbadoes Street told Newstalk ZB's Chris Lynch that he saw the man. The witness also said several women were running away from the man.

Another witness posted on social media they had seen a man being arrested on Moorhouse Avenue.

"[He was] saturated in (a lot) of blood, all over his clothes from neck down. Not nice."

Armagh St has been cordoned off at the intersection of Barbadoes St, but police say there is no further risk to the public.
