The Tauranga City Council is warning residents to be aware of a new parking ticket scam.

A fraudulent parking ticket was discovered placed on a local's vehicle this week which said the driver had incurred a $400 fine for failing to produce a licence plate.

The ticket includes the council's logo, phone number and options to pay at their customer service centre.

But in a statement, a spokesperson said: "This has not been issued by Council".

The council said there are several ways to confirm their tickets are legitimate, including a unique 6 digit infringement number that can be found on parking and bus lane tickets.

This number can be used to pay the fine through the Council's website.

"If paying a fine via internet banking always use the infringement number and the word 'parking' in the description to ensure the money is allocated correctly.

"If you have any concerns, please contact us to confirm the legitimacy of an infringement notice on 075777000 or parkingadmin@tauranga.govt.nz."
