A water main has burst in the Wellington suburb of Karori, leaving some residents without water.

Wellington Water said the main on Collier Ave burst at about 9:30am on Thursday and a tanker has been called in to provide water to affected residents in the area.

The burst main follows several similar incidents including one last week, where a burst drinking main sent a geyser-like fountain of water gushing into the sky on Aro St.

A 110-year-old sewage pipe also burst in the CBD last Monday, closing streets and causing a stench.

The incidents have prompted Mayor Andy Foster to call a meeting with Wellington Water. He admitted there's been "underinvestment" in the city's water mains.

"The reality is there has been underinvestment since the first pipe went into the ground in the 19th century so we need to invest more," he said.
