Police release name of child killed in Auckland school car park crash

The young girl who died after being hit by a vehicle in an Auckland school car park is Joanna Kong, police say.

Joanna, 5, was hit by a car at Buckland Beach's Pigeon Mountain Primary School on Tuesday and died at Starship Hospital on Sunday

Senior Sergeant Anson Lin confirmed her death on Sunday: "Sadly, she passed away earlier this morning with family by her side at Starship Hospital.

"Police extend our condolences to her family at this incredibly difficult time."

Police say their thoughts "continue to be with her family and the wider Pigeon Mountain Primary School community."

The crash happened at around 8:40am. Joanna was a pedestrian and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Police say investigations into the crash are still ongoing, although on Wednesday a spokesperson confirmed a 77-year-old man has been forbidden from driving following the incident.

Snr Sgt Lin said police are providing support to her family and the wider school community who he says have been "greatly impacted".

"Going forward we will continue to work with partner agencies to help ensure those that require support have access to it."
