A person has died in a crash involving a car and a motorbike in the Far North.

Police said the crash happened about 11:30am on Sunday, on Far North Rd/State Highway 1 north of Te Kao.

The motorcyclist died at the scene, police said. The road is closed and the serious crash unit will investigate.

There have now been seven fatal crashes this Easter weekend - all on the North Island. Two people were killed in separate crashes in the Waikato region on Thursday night, and one person died in a fiery crash north of Taupō on Good Friday.

On Saturday morning, the Easter weekend road toll rose to four after a second fatal crash in the Bay of Plenty.

A person died after a crash involving a bus and a pedestrian in central Wellington just before 10pm on Saturday.

And a crash involving a car and a power pole on the Kāpiti Coast on Saturday night critically injured the driver, who later died in hospital.

Last year there were no deaths on the roads during the Easter period last year. The official Easter period began at 4pm on Thursday and ends at 6am on Tuesday.
