Two people inside a light aircraft have escaped injury after it landed with its wheels up at Christchurch Airport.

Police said emergency services were advised of the incident just after 12:20pm on Thursday.

Indications were the aircraft had a mechanical issue and landed with its wheels up, a Christchurch Airport spokeswoman told Newshub.

"The two people on board are both safe," the spokeswoman said. "The airport remains open and continuing to operate as work continues with various agencies."

It comes a day after a light aircraft crashed in Canterbury's Waimakariri District, where one person was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition and another sustained moderate injuries.

That crash happened just before midday on Wednesday, near the rural community of Glentui.
