Police have named the woman who died after falling off a charter boat in Waitematā Harbour on Thursday evening.

She was Danielle Tamarua, 25, of Auckland, who was a guest on the vessel with LittleWolf Catering.

Another person ended up in the water trying to help her, but was uninjured.

"Police and Maritime NZ continue to work together to understand the circumstances leading to Ms Tamarua’s death," police told Newshub in a statement.

Enquiries are ongoing.

"Danielle Tamarua was a beautiful, kind and much loved member of our team,"  LittleWolf Catering said in a statement. "We are sad beyond words and extend our deepest condolences to Danielle's family and friends."

RNZ reported on Thursday she was one of about 30 passengers onboard the chartered vessel, which had left the Viaduct Harbour earlier that afternoon.

Zefiro Charters' Lawrence Knight and Ben Mostert on Friday expressed their sympathies to those close to Tamarua.

"We are shocked and devastated with the events that unfolded yesterday afternoon. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased."
