Investigation launched after two people found dead in firearms incident in Awarua, Northland

Two men have been found dead at a property in the Northland community of Awarua.

Shortly after 7am on Monday, police received reports of a firearms incident on Mangakahia Road.

A police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub that two people were found dead at the property.

"Police are at the scene of a serious incident in Awarua, Northland," they said. "An investigation is underway to establish what has occurred."

In an update later on Monday morning, Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston, Northland CIB, said it's understood the two men were known to each other.

"An investigation into the shooting is underway with cordons in place around the property.
A scene examination has commenced and police will remain present throughout the day," Det Insp Johnston said.

"As a result of enquiries to date, it appears the two men were known to each other and Police are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths. Police are in the process of notifying next of kin."

A spokesperson for St John confirmed an ambulance was dispatched to Mangakahia Road shortly after 7am.
