Police hunt young alleged ram raid group who broke into Northland petrol station

Police are hunting for a group of alleged thieves who used a car to smash their way into a Northland petrol station.

Officers were called to the GAS Bream Bay in Ruakākā just after 12:30am on Wednesday as the incident unfolded.

Violent footage was captured on CCTV, showing a yellow car reversing at high speed and bursting through the front doors.

A group of masked youths waiting outside then rush in - one who appears to be a young female.

This video was posted to Facebook, along with photos showing the clean-up.

"Early start for us!!! Can't call it spring cleaning," Gas Bream Bay added.

Co-owner Chris Elavia told NZHerald all the alleged thieves made off with were cigarettes.

"The till was locked in the back - the till was empty."

The raid has caused anger in the community with calls for the offenders to be held responsible.

"If your child was not home you need to find out and be a parent," one person commented.

"If your child was part of this it will only get worse, deal with it now rather than visiting them in jail."

Others called the youths "mongrels", "absolute losers" and various other epithets.

Police say the yellow vehicle was left at the scene and the alleged offenders fled in another.

"The vehicle that was located at the scene has been seized by police and further forensic enquiries will be conducted today," a police spokesperson says.

"Our enquiries are still in the very early stages into the burglary. Anyone with information that can assist police is asked to contact 105 quoting the reference number P046632783."
