The man who was fatally shot by police in Hamilton on Wednesday had fired a military-style semi-automatic weapon at officers, Detective Inspector Scott Beard has confirmed..
Further specifics about the gun and the circumstances of the shoot-out are still under investigation, Det Insp Beard said in a statement on Friday afternoon.
"A cordon remains in place at the scene on O’Donoghue Street in Hillcrest."
An officer who was injured in a fall during the incident has undergone surgery and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
"An incident such as this can have long-lasting emotional impacts on the officers involved and their families," Beard said.
"Officers involved in critical incidents are given a minimum 10 days' leave and access to a range of other support services."
A post mortem is taking place on Friday and the man's name will be released once he has been formally identified.
